New Zealand Defence Force UFO files

New Zealand Defence Force / Archives New Zealand

The New Zealand Defence Force released its full UFO archive — roughly 2,000 pages covering 1952 to 1984 — to Archives New Zealand in December 2010. The release includes the famous 1978 Kaikoura lights radar/visual case investigated by RNZAF.

About the program

The NZDF began informally collecting UFO reports in the early 1950s as part of its standard intelligence flow. The records were maintained through the early 1980s and then largely dormant. In response to a 2009 Official Information Act request from researchers, the NZDF declassified the entire file in tranches and transferred it to Archives New Zealand in December 2010.

The single most internationally cited case in the file is the 31 December 1978 Kaikoura lights incident, in which a freight aircraft over the South Island reported persistent visual and radar contact with multiple unidentified objects, with film shot by an Australian television crew aboard the aircraft. The RNZAF's contemporaneous investigation report is part of the released file.
