MoD

Ministry of Defence UFO Desk

Ministry of Defence

The UK Ministry of Defence ran a continuous UFO investigation desk from 1950 to 2009. After the desk closed, the MoD released roughly 60,000 pages of files to the National Archives in batches between 2008 and 2017, making it one of the largest single-state UFO disclosures on record.

About the program

The MoD's UFO work originated with the Flying Saucer Working Party, a 1950 Defence Scientific Intelligence committee chaired by Sir Henry Tizard, which produced a confidential report concluding the phenomenon required no further investigation. The desk that became known as DI55 (later DI(ST)) and finally Sec(AS)2a continued to handle public reports for the next six decades, primarily as a national-security filtering function rather than a research program.

The UFO desk was officially closed on 1 December 2009. The MoD's stated rationale was that no UFO report had ever been judged a threat to UK air defence and that the resources were better spent elsewhere.

The post-closure release programme was managed in cooperation with The National Archives at Kew. Files were declassified in tranches between May 2008 and June 2017, ultimately covering the period 1978-2009 in detail and including the famous Rendlesham Forest file, the 1980 Cosford incident, and the 1996 Defence Intelligence Staff 'Condign' report on UAP scientifically and technically.
